About Mia McPherson

DuPage County Circuit Court Judge Candidate

Mia has over 23 years of legal experience serving the interests of her clients in the civil and criminal courtrooms of DuPage County. She has built valuable professional relationships with colleagues, adversaries, courthouse personnel, and members of law enforcement that together with her passion for justice, well-prepare her to serve on the judiciary. She has the essential knowledge and background in a wide variety of legal matters, including:

  • Prosecution - As the DUI, traffic and ordinance violation prosecutor in Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Westmont, and Wayne, Mia handled all aspects of court cases, including witness preparation, driver's license suspension hearings, motion practice, plea negotiations, and trials before judges and juries. As an advocate on behalf of the municipality, Mia was available to the police officers and administration at all times. Her dedication to the role of prosecutor led to invaluable working relationships with the law enforcement community.
  • Defense - Protecting the rights of the criminally accused throughout her legal career, Mia regularly handled a caseload of over 100 clients while serving as an Assistant Public Defender in DuPage County for six years. In that role, she counseled her clients, developed essential negotiating skills and gained extensive trial experience in both misdemeanor and serious felony matters. The time Mia spent as a public servant in the DuPage County Courthouse formed long-lasting, mutually respected professional relationships with her fellow attorneys, prosecutors, police officers, courtroom and administrative personnel, as well as members of the DuPage County judiciary. Her career beginnings have led her to a successful private criminal defense practice, where she continues to value guiding her clients towards a new path of success.
  • Municipal - Mia worked side by side with the leadership of various municipalities including mayors, presidents, managers, and support staff to draft local ordinances designed to protect the safety and well-being of local residents. Mia was instrumental in implementing Elmhurst Police Department’s own “Alive at 25” educational program for teens and young adults. The program continues to operate today and plays an integral part in safeguarding the community and educating youthful offenders.
  • Family Law - As a family law practitioner, Mia represents litigants in all aspects of a divorce proceeding, from advising clients of the process to counseling them through a tumultuous time in their lives. She compassionately advocates on their behalf in matters of parenting time, child support, financial issues and property division.
  • Community and Family - Mia has been an Elmhurst resident for 23 years where she is truly invested in her community. She is proud to have her small business law firm in Elmhurst and spends countless hours for community organizations such as Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and Haymarket Center. She and her husband Pete have raised their two boys Charlie (20) and Sam (18) in Elmhurst. Charlie is a sophomore at the University of Minnesota and Sam, a York High School senior, has committed to attend Purdue University’s Honors College in the fall of 2022.

Mia’s varied and well-rounded professional experience enables her to see issues from several different perspectives and will allow her to serve the citizens of DuPage County with fair-mindedness and dignity.
